From proof of concept to a drone team

Proof of concept

Rijksvastgoedbedrijf uses properties to help achieve the aims of the central government. At AirHub, we worked with the inspection department, which inspects assets of both the government and defense. The inspections vary from crack formation to leakages in the building. In addition to the structural condition, the technical installation and mechanical engineering installations on the roof are also examined.

The challenge

Rijksvastgoedbedrijf (The Central Government Real Estate Agency) wanted to investigate if (and how) the agency can benefit from implementing drones. The main purpose the drones would have is to do inspections of buildings they own. This is currently done by people who have to, for example, climb on the roof to do an inspection. Not only does this take longer, there are also risks involved.

It really is something new in our toolbox. And it makes a big difference in driving aerial work platforms back and forth. That’s how we did these kinds of inspections until now.
The inspectors, Rijksvastgoedbedrijf

In the summer of 2021, AirHub started working together with the Central Government Real Estate Agency on a proof of concept. In total, AirHub flew for five days with a team of inspectors to inspect buildings at different locations for different purposes (e.g., construction, leakage).

We also used different drones, the DJI Matrice 300 (with H20T) and DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced, to compare the specifications. It showed that both drones were able to generate high-quality footage that fulfills the requirements of the agency’s inspectors. It also increased safety and is a more efficient way to carry out inspections of large and complex buildings.

Based on the proof of concept, the agency decided to implement drones in its organization and set up its own drone team. Again, they contacted AirHub to support them with the implementation process and approvals. We set up the SORAs, their Operations Manuals, and applied for an Operational Authorization at the Dutch CAA.

With the use of our software package, the agency will fly securely and compliantly. The Drone Operations Center provides insights to the office workers, while the Ground Control Apps support the inspectors on-site during the operation.

  • An efficient way to inspect buildings
  • Less risk involved for the inspectors, meaning it’s safer
  • High-quality footage of the buildings
  • Rijksvastgoedbedrijf didn’t have to figure out if it’s beneficial for them or not, AirHub did all the heavy lifting
